Experience Olomouc!

Experience Olomouc!

We asked some of our students to tell us about their favourite places in Olomouc. This is what they came up with

Poděbrady (Agnese Olmati)

If you love nature and open air spaces, Poděbrady is the perfect place for you! Go there to take a swim, have a picnic or just to chill surrounded by a green and fresh environment. The best time to go: at sunset, to enjoy Czech summer evenings by the water. How to get there: take bus n. 20 from Envelopa campus, it will reach Poděbrady in around 10 min.

Park Bezručovy Sady (Richard Blais)

If I had to choose my favourite part in Olomouc, I think I would go for the park Bezručovy sady, aka “The-park-you-go-though-to-go-to-Uni”. Being an old fortress, Olomouc is built in a certain way – a plateau containing the old city, towering the newer Olomouc built in the more recent years. Because of that military past, all the university facilities I needed to go to for Euroculture were located on this plateau I was walking around each day to get access to one of these abrupt stairs that gives entry to the city. And when walking around that plateau I passed through a charming park, encouraging me to stroll, to lower my walking pace, and to look around before going to class. Going to work each day has never been more satisfying than during my time in Olomouc. Understand me, I did a part of my studies in Paris, in which I had to commute everyday one full hour in the foul and crowded Métro to go to work. Olomouc contrasted drastically with this experience. Here, each day on my way to university, I saw parents playing frisbee with their children, owners walking their dogs, trees changing colours as autumn settled, and frost tainting the grass with an eerie touch of white as winter indicated me that my time in Olomouc was soon over.
I have a great affection to the city of Olomouc in general, but to that park in particular. I am eager to enjoy summer on its grass, probably with a couple of other students, a beer in my hand, music, and happy laughter after a long exhausting day of the IP.

RCO (Regional Centre) and the Rozárium (Andrea Trenta)

RCO, next to the Main Station (on the 18th floor there is a cheap Chinese restaurant – personally the food is not worth it, but the beer is fine) with a superb view of the city, unique and priceless.
Rozárium, in front of the Faculty of Science, and very close to the Department of History (perfect for chilling out)

Aerial view of Olomouc (Nina Tousch)

There is nothing more beautiful than an aerial view of Olomouc to capture its architecture and colours. On top of the Saint Moritz Church, you can admire the city, but there are many other places that you can walk up to enjoy the city from a bird’s view.
