Professor Unai Pascual graduated in economics from the University of the Basque Country (1996), obtained a Master (1997) and PhD (2002) in environmental economics at the University of York, UK. After lecturing at the University of Manchester (2000-2002) he moved to the University of Cambridge where he worked for 10 years (2002-2011). Since 2011 he is Ikerbasque (Basque Foundation for Science) Research Professor at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3). Prof. Pascual has held guest lectureship and visiting positions at the University of York, University of Wyoming (USA), Norwegian University of Life Sciences, University of Deusto, Universidad Autónoma de la Pampa (Argentina), Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (República Dominicana) and Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (México). 

Prof. Unai Pascual has held positions in different international scientific bodies. Recently he has been member of the multidisciplinary expert panel (MEP) of IPBES (2015-2018), Lead Author of the IPBES Global Assessment (2015-2018) and currently co-Chairs the IPBES Values Assessment (2018-2022). He has also co-Chaired the Natural Assets Knowledge Action Network of Future Earth, and is member of the scientific steering committees of the Global Land Programme and ecoSERVICES (Future Earth). He acts in various advisory boards including BiodivERsA, the network of national and regional funding organisations promoting pan-European research on biodiversity and ecosystem services. 

Prof. Unai Pascual has published more than 200 scholarly works on global sustainability issues, including books published by Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, and Palgrave, and more than a hundred peer reviewed academic articles in journals such as Science, Nature Sustainability, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, BioScience, Global Environmental Change, Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainabiilty, World Development, Ecological Economics, etc. (see publications). 

Prof. Pascual also has regular collaborations with the media such as in TV (Euskal Telebista), radio (e.g., Radio Euskadi) and newspapers (Berria) in order to communicate his research to the general public.
